Haskett gym owners and others who have been around fitness agree that many changes have occurred in the past 20 years especially the huge explosion of group exercise classes — primarily to accommodate the influx of the non-stereotypical gym goer either the stay-at-home mom like Haskett or the baby boomer who continues to work out. Barry Newton owner of Newtone Health & Fitness in Lafayette has been in the business since 1988. He said one of the major changes has been the variety and increase in the number of classes the gym offers each week. He offers 75 classes each week ranging from water aerobics to yoga to Bodypump.

Regular classes started Monday Dec. 1 and a grand opening is slated for January. Popp has taught aerobics classes for several years most recently through Hutchinson?s Parks and Recreation program. Many participants wanted classes continued beyond that timeframe and a variety of class times and styles she said. In addition area businesses requested on-site classes for their employees all of which have been added to her class schedule. CORE Exercise Studio will be a lifestyle business for Popp allowing her to turn a longtime hobby into a business while she continues to be employed as an Internet Marketing Strategist for Vivid Image in Hutchinson.

A new study found moms-to-be who regularly do water aerobics are less likely to need pain relief during labor. Researchers suggest it’s probably due to the stress relieving effect of the exercise. Unique brain waves spotted in autistic children may help explain their trouble communicating. Scientists have discovered autistic kids react to sounds a fraction of a second slower than normal children. Identifying those brain responses may help doctors develop more effective treatment.

Some 21 folks from Myers’ Los Gatos and Santa Clara classes clocked their daily totals for 21 days. Scoring highest total was Marianne Fry who took 283616 steps during the three-week period. Her highest one-day total was 20062 placing her third over all in that category.
